Why Exercise Matters for Your Dog

Exercise isn't a luxury for dogs β€” it's a fundamental need. Just like humans, dogs require regular physical activity to stay healthy, happy, and well-behaved. Yet it's one of the most overlooked aspects of dog ownership. Here's why daily exercise matters and how much your dog really needs.

Physical Health Benefits

Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risk of obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, joint problems, and heart disease. Active dogs have stronger muscles, better cardiovascular fitness, and healthier digestive systems. Exercise also supports joint mobility, which is particularly important as dogs age.

Mental Stimulation and Behaviour

A tired dog is a well-behaved dog. Many behavioural problems β€” excessive barking, destructive chewing, digging, and anxiety β€” stem from pent-up energy and boredom. Walks provide mental stimulation through new smells, sights, and sounds. Sniffing alone is mentally exhausting for dogs and incredibly satisfying. Even a 20-minute walk in a new environment can tire a dog more than an hour in the garden.

How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Need?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but here's a general guide:

  • Small breeds (Jack Russells, Cavaliers): 30–60 minutes daily
  • Medium breeds (Springers, Border Collies): 1–2 hours daily
  • Large breeds (Labradors, Retrievers): 1–2 hours daily
  • High-energy breeds (Huskies, Dalmatians): 2+ hours daily
  • Senior dogs: Shorter, gentler walks β€” but still daily

Puppies need exercise too, but it should be limited to avoid damaging developing joints β€” a common guideline is five minutes per month of age, twice a day.

What Happens Without Enough Exercise?

Under-exercised dogs often develop problem behaviours. They may become destructive, overly vocal, reactive on leads, or anxious. Obesity is also a serious risk β€” the PDSA estimates that around 40% of UK dogs are overweight. Regular exercise is the simplest way to prevent these issues.

Exercise at the Kennels

When your dog stays at Greenbank, exercise is a core part of their daily routine. Every dog gets walked twice daily in the beautiful Lancashire countryside around Warton. Our rural location means quiet lanes, open fields, and plenty of interesting scents to explore. We tailor walks to each dog's ability and energy levels β€” a young Springer gets a very different walk from a 14-year-old Labrador.

Whether your dog is with us for a single day of day-care or a longer boarding stay, we make sure they get the physical activity and mental stimulation they need to be happy and settled.
