Preparing Your Dog for a Kennel Stay

Dog being prepared for a boarding kennel stay

Leaving your dog at a boarding kennel for the first time can feel daunting β€” for both of you. But with a bit of preparation, you can make the experience smooth, positive, and even enjoyable for your four-legged friend. Here's our practical guide to getting your dog ready for their stay at Greenbank.

1. Book a Trial Day or Day-Care Visit

If your dog has never stayed at a kennel before, consider booking them in for a day of doggy day-care first. This lets them explore the environment, meet the staff, and get used to the sights and sounds without the pressure of an overnight stay. A positive first impression goes a long way.

2. Check Vaccinations Are Up to Date

All reputable boarding kennels require dogs to be fully vaccinated. Make sure your dog's boosters are current β€” this typically includes core vaccines and a kennel cough vaccination (given at least two weeks before boarding). Bring your vaccination certificate with you on drop-off day.

3. Keep Feeding Routine Consistent

Sudden changes in diet are one of the most common causes of upset stomachs in kennelled dogs. We always recommend bringing your dog's usual food with them, clearly labelled with their name and feeding instructions. At Greenbank, we're happy to follow your exact routine β€” same food, same times, same portions.

4. Bring Comfort Items from Home

A familiar blanket, a well-worn jumper that smells of you, or a favourite toy can make all the difference. These familiar scents help your dog feel secure in their new surroundings. Avoid bringing anything valuable or easily destroyed β€” kennel life can be exciting!

5. Be Positive at Drop-Off

Dogs are incredibly perceptive to our emotions. If you're anxious, your dog will sense it. Keep goodbyes calm, brief, and upbeat. A long, emotional farewell can actually make things harder. Trust that your dog is in safe hands β€” and they'll be back in your arms before you know it.

6. Tell Us Everything

The more we know about your dog, the better we can care for them. Let us know about any medical conditions, dietary needs, behavioural quirks, fears, or preferences. Does your dog prefer a quiet corner? Are they nervous around other breeds? We want to tailor their stay to suit them perfectly.

7. Consider Microchipping

While it's now a legal requirement in the UK, it's worth double-checking that your dog's microchip details are up to date before boarding. If your dog is not yet chipped, most vets can do this quickly and affordably. It's the single best way to ensure your dog can always be identified.

At Greenbank, we treat every dog as an individual. Our small, family-run kennels mean your dog gets genuine personal attention, daily walks in the Lancashire countryside, and the care and comfort they deserve. If you have any questions about preparing for your dog's stay, don't hesitate to get in touch.
